The World Premiere Of Alberta Ballet's Frankenstein
An electrifying tale of man playing god, Mary Shelley's gothic masterpiece Frankenstein has fascinated readers ever since its first publication in 1818. Celebrating the iconic novel's 200th anniversary, the Alberta Ballet proudly presents the world premiere of artistic director Jean Grand-Maitre's Frankenstein Ballet, which brings together six of Canada's leading designers, a multi-media stage design, jaw-dropping video projections, a spine-tingling soundtrack and of course, a breathtaking mixture of contemporary and classical dance.
Shelley's skilful portrayal of society, isolation, prejudice and revenge is transported from its original late 1700s setting to the present day, adding a thoroughly terrifying modern twist with the introduction of familiar technological advancements like stem cell research, cloning and A.I. Decidedly not for the faint-hearted, the horror-ballet distills Shelley's gripping invocation of the pursuit of knowledge with groundbreaking kinetic story-telling that revels in the tale's gory glory.
