Why see Alberta Ballet - Ballet BC?

Three Bold Contemporary Works

A company renowned for its bold and evocative fusion of modern dance and traditional classical ballet, The Alberta Ballet company has developed its reputation for genre-bending and boundary pushing collaboration with the world's greatest choreographers ever since its artistic director Emily Molnar took up the creative reins in 2009. Their pioneering spirit lights up 2019, as seen in their Ballet BC program, a triptych of works from choreographer's on the very edge of contemporary dance evolution.

Things kick off with ballet and visual arts champion William Forsythe's Enemy In The Figure, a thrilling and wildly theatrical piece driven by the choreographer's vibrant exploration of vision, perception, form and chaos. The four elements collide to a dark and angular score by frequent Forsythe collaborator Thom Willems. A former student of Forsythe, Crystal Pite demonstrates her own examination of tension and release in Solo Echo, a work that conjures an exquisite wintry melancholy with meaning-heavy movements set to two of Brahms' Cello Concertos. The program comes to a close with Medhi Walerski's Petite Ceremonie, a richly imaginative piece originally created for the company in 2011.
